Serving the underprivileged
'The Best Way to Find Yourself Is To Lose Yourself In The Service Of Others'
- Mahatma Gandhi.
Keeping this in mind, we have been able to help the community with employment opportunities via business loans, micro-lending with zero percent interest, providing scholarships to the children and several other initiatives. We are now able to witness the change and transformation that has taken place in the people dwelling here.Swabhimaan envisions to enable a quality life and make people independent through various programs. Extending the help where it is needed the most is our first step to make it happen. Our approach in this mission is not just limited to training people in job-oriented-skills but to also provide health support, education, job opportunities for women & differently abled people of the community.
Of all the challenges, the most urgent is hunger which is the most basic human need. Lakhs of grown-ups and children go to bed hungry. As part of one of our drives to address the issue of malnutrition and make the community hunger-free, we collect food from 5-star hotels, corporates and big functions in the city, which otherwise will go to waste, and distribute it in the community every day. By distributing food on a daily basis, we impact more than 60,000 people in the community every month. We provide groceries worth INR 600 to nearly 2,500 families which have been affected due to the pandemic every month. We also provided freshly cooked meals for around 10,000 people during the pandemic and it has now come down to 4,000 a day of which most are local children and elders of the community.
DONATEAn English teacher was brought in to conduct regular English classes to improve the proficiency of children in around 12 government schools in order to boost their confidence at looking for better opportunities in the future. We then moved on to providing scholarships to hundreds of children and around 400 children continue to benefit from this every year. We’ve helped thousands of children so far with over 2000 scholarships and wish to continue to reach more people.
The daily wage workers of the community spend almost 15% to 20% of their income on healthcare which made us realize the importance of having affordable healthcare. Hence we opened 3 charity clinics in which we charge only 10/- for both consultation and medicines. We believe prevention is better than cure. Therefore, we also offer counseling to educate the people of the community. These clinics provide medical services to an average of 100 patients daily.Providing resources for better health is another area where Swabhimaan is working relentlessly. With our vast network of corporates and NGOs, we conduct health-hygiene awareness sessions, provide low-cost clinics, and distribute sanitary kits as part of our few ongoing activities.
DONATEWe at Swabhimaan, try to recognize the respective traits of women, youth and differently abled people of the community and bestow them with opportunities to make them independent. We run various job-oriented skill building sessions to prepare them for jobs within and outside the community. We sell paper & cloth bags which are made by these trained professionals across the city. It is because of their huge contribution that Swabhimaan could rigorously work towards making the community plastic free.
Self employment is one of our key focuses. We have trained 25 women to stitch cloth bags in Rajendranagar and L R Nagar. They now earn close to INR 300 per day by stitching cloth bags at home. We also conduct workshops to train elderly women in preparation of disposable covers for sanitary pads and packaging bags for pharmacies. Out of which around 10 women sell sustainable sanitary pads from door to door in our community. They now earn close to INR 200 per day. Hundreds of women in the community make use of the interest-free micro-lending to generate incomes from homes thus supplementing their mens income and guaranteeing better nourishment, education and healthcare for their children.
